| | Britain Braced For Huge Spider Invasion! Found a news article online warning people that there will be a boom in the amount of spiders seen in and around the home this year. I for one think that this is brilliant news! However, I did get a little bemused by this statement: The charity Buglife said breeding conditions are perfect this year for British spiders like the daddy longlegs (or cranefly) and house spider.
Spiders like the daddy longleg (or cranefly)??
What do you think guys, have our eight-legged friends learned to fly yet?

A nice video

| | | Re: Britain Braced For Huge Spider Invasion! Big fan of spiders, so I think it is good news. It is also good news for Wrens, as was pointed out on Radio 4 (what did you think an older gentleman like me would listen to?), as they are prime grubbers around in leaves and so on.
So more spiders, more wrens, more things that feed on wrens (don't know what does, they are so feisty).

What do you think guys, have our eight-legged friends learned to fly yet? | Ah, the joys of common names! Well, the term Daddy Long-legs isn't used strictly for craneflies ( it itself is a large group) - but for some domestic spiders like large tegenarias and the Cellar spiders, such as Pholcus phalangioides.
The term is used for craneflies too, of course - but have you heard craneflies then being called Dragonflies? Common misconceptions, or confusion over common names - or just our association of what's-what. I suppose if Buglife used less confusing Latin people wouldn't understand?
Take care, Jason

| | | Re: Britain Braced For Huge Spider Invasion! What I heard on the radio was that it would be a good autumn for spiders AND craneflies; though given the lengthy dry spell down here in the south-east I'm not expecting that many craneflies! |

| | | Re: Britain Braced For Huge Spider Invasion! I had a mega sized tegenaria running across my bedroom floor the other evening, I did a count of Pholcus phalangioides in the house tho and I still have them in every room, therefore looking upon the stray tegenaria as very very lucky !!
