Came across this in my local wood.

Speaking from next to no knowledge of spiders - but it looks just like the underside of a garden spider as shown in the Gallery. (I've been looking at some today and they are getting to be Huge!)

That looks the favourite for an ID. The legs appear too short for Meta segmenta.

In my garden, the many Araneus diadematus (Garden Spider) seem to get bigger every year, especially those living in the greenhouse.

Clever that - I assume they cant be got at by birds then and will still have a steady food supply. You probably have the biggest garden spiders in the UK
