| | | I think Meta mengei...
Seen in Brede High Woods, East Sussex. I'm pretty sure it's one of the Tetragnathidae and Meta mengei seems a good bet or am I completely barking?

As Frits says, I'm not sure what to look for in discerning the difference between them here. However, M. segmentata tends to be out later then mengei.
Take care, Jason PS Welcome to WAB, Frits - just realised that's your first post!

| | | Re: I think Meta mengei... I'd say Meta segmentata. As it's male the ventral tarsal/metatarsal hairs on legs I should be visible at this magnification if it was Meta mengei. I'm unable at the moment on this laptop to enlarge the photo to say 100%.

Here's a 100% crop from the original image...
Judging by the drawings on page 308 of the Michael J Roberts field guide, I'd say the hairs look long enough for M. mengei. What do you think?

| | | Re: I think Meta mengei... I'm away from home at the moment, though I'm sure the row of hairs are distinctly at 90 degrees to the tarsus/metatarsus in M. mengei males.
