I'm quite happy with Philodromus sp. It's just that I like to read up on the various options and put them into 'most likely' order. It's all part of the learning curve.
Also, some of the internet specimens which I have been trying to use for ID comparison may well have been dead for some time and lost their colours in the preserving fluid.
And, like many spiders, natural camoflage variation can cause considerable colour differences. The illustration for P. aureolus male in Roberts shows a greyish brown specimen with some white chevron markings on the tip of the abdomen.
It was evening and in shadow so I had to use a bit of flash to get good colours, but comparison with the background colour makes me confident that my image is reasonably correct.
After a couple of photos it ran off up the wall towards an area where there are various webs; which made me think it was probably some form of web spinner.
Anyhow, thanks once again for the input, and training.
