| | | Tegenaria epigyne ID Hi all. Last night this large female (approx 15mm) was running across my kitchen. I managed to catch her after a stand off, involving me holding a pint glass and her adopting a Funnel-Web raised front legs pose!
The closest I can ID using the pic of her epigyne is Tegenaria agrestris, this is based on the overall shape and the 'band' at the bottom of her epigyne. But I would like an expert view please |

| | Re: Tegenaria epigyne ID I'm sure it's either T. gigantea or T. agrestis, but I have to admit I get the two mixed up sometimes. Their markings are very similar, although in my personal experiance T. agrestis has legs with a strong grey tint to them.
This one really reared up at you? I've encountered more than my fair share of both species, mostly due to the fact I go looking for them, but even when trying to capture them I've never had one go agressive. Lovely photos, btw, that is one beautiful eight-legged! |

| | | Re: Tegenaria epigyne ID This is why you need a microscope (sometimes using clove oil which makes it transparent, so you can set the internals)
Comparing it to photos, I'd have said T.atrica, so you can see how confusing it is!

| | | Re: Tegenaria epigyne ID Being picky I know but I'd like to see a slightly clearer photo taken at 90 degrees to the epigyne as this is slightly behind and to one side. Having said that the detail does bear a strong resemblance to that of Tegenaria agrestis , comparative to other Tegenaria.

| | | Re: Tegenaria epigyne ID No other pics I'm afraid. If it helps Im in Bristol, South West (I read T.atrica has only been recorded from Northrtn England?). And yes Entorien she did rear up at me. Like you I have seen (and handled) many Tegenaria but never come across one so aggresive in her behaviour |

| | | Re: Tegenaria epigyne ID Pretty sparse records and many a bit dated now. Probably a reflection on recorders not bothering to i.d. Tegenaria when they find them or maybe lack of recorders?
