spotted this spider on the way home from work today, never seen a green on before, could someone please tell me what it is?

Hi Graham 
It's likely a Green Orb-weaver - Araniella sp., and either A. cucurbitina or A. opisthgrapha. They can only really be seperated by microscopic examination...  |

There are a few other Araniella spp which look similar to both of those - though they are rare in the UK.

But yes, in all likelihood its either A. cucurbitina or A. opisthographa (watch those typos Jason  )

Thanks for the info, it was for me a real find since i've only ever seen black spiders before  |

No, its on an orb web - Nigma walckenaeri builds a cribellate web (think a loose fluffy sheet) on a curled leaf, which they hide underneath.

We have around 650 species of spider in the UK and they come in lots of colours!
