spider id please false widow????

i found this spider on my house wall, and need some help with id. to the bare eye it looks black to dark brown, it has a strange pattern on the upside of its abdomen, which looks like a smiley face in grey. it has a grey band that goes around the abdomen, and some grey markings on the underside. its body is about the size of a 5 pence piece.
any suggestions welcome. i do have some really great close up photos (not bad for someone who gets palpatations looking at house spiders), so i can send an email containing the other photos to help id.

thanks for tweaking, i must say that i dont find this little guy half as scary as a common hairy house spider, which make me cry and shake and generaly act like a wimp. i am facinated by this one much to my kids chargrin.
i live in Southampton so it comes as no surprise . would this seriously harm my little dogs (yorkie and chihuahua) if they got thier paws on it?
