In truth, it is a deadly spider, it's deadliness to it's normal prey is undisputed.
Spider joke: "I quite like people, but I don't think I could eat a whole one."

| | | Re: UK Spider Bites I think those bite reports were put up by the same person who was having a laugh.
"Dog went into instant shock and developed liver poisoning." - "whole hand became septic" - "Ear started growing out of wifes back".
Silly! "D
What is the name of that garden spider that's long and thin like a Daddy Long Legs, but bigger and heavier, it is green and has huge jaws? I didn't see that on the list but that can bite. Most of these spiders you'd have to force them into biting but if you do that to any spider it will try to bite. If I pick a spider up by its legs and put my other hands fingers to its mouth it will bite. A million times I've been gardening or working and have picked a spider up to move it so it doesn't get trod on and I can see it trying to bite my gloves.
One of the only times I've been bitten by a spider was a mouse spider I was trying to move from my room and when I tried to pick it up from my palm I couldn't get a grip because it was so smooth and it decided to bite my hand and stay like that until I put it under the cold tap! It didn't hurt but it did make me feel shocked and I had a tiny hard bit of skin on my palm for a while afterwards that was like a tiny, painless wort.

| | Re: UK Spider Bites Curiously, I was once bitten by a Tiny House Spider, (Oonops Domesticus). Dratted thing was about 2mm long! A tap was requred to make it let go, and I'm never sure if I should be insulted, or impressed!
(Needless to say, it didn't get through my skin, although it left a red mark!) |

| | | Re: UK Spider Bites We live in southern UK.
Twenty minutes ago, my wife received a very nasty spider-bite on her finger, from a spider which I can't identify. Her finger immediately became red, swollen and painful. I have the dead spider here and can only describe it as having a black body with orange legs. The body is about 1 cm and it is pretty solid looking (not spindley) The legs are short and thick, and it ran across the duvet!
My question is, should we rush off to hospital or just sit it out and see what happens? I assume it is a UK resident and not an exotic import!
Thanks |

| | | Re: UK Spider Bites Hi Tallus, and welcome to WAB!
Sorry to hear about the bite! The pain and swelling sound very typical of any arachnid bite, nothing unusual. However, does she have an epi-pen or has she ever had an allergic reaction to any insect bites before? If not, then it shouldn't be too bad and will pass in 24-48hrs or so. Keep an eye on her, though allergic reactions are rare!!
Take care, Jason

| | | Re: UK Spider Bites Thank you for the prompt and reassuring reply. I have worked in the countryside for much of my life, and this is the first toxic reaction I ever saw to a UK spider bite.
Thankfully, the pain passed in about 8 hours with no further problems.
Thanks |
