| | | Re: Spider on Epsom common Not at all sure about this one. Possibly Agelenidae family and could be Textrix denticulata.
But that is just a rough guess. Wait for an expert to come along with a better suggestion. It is a good clear photo so somebody should be able to add a bit more to the ID. |

| | | Re: Spider on Epsom common An interesting species. Not something I am familar with and my book doesn't show any spinners so I never even thought about this species. Have made a note on the illustration.
Toby, I try to compare spiders, and other creatures with something I am familar with. In my case, I think what diameter drill would I use to make a clearance hole that size.
You can use anything that you are familar with, maybe the diameter of a pencil or how far would it come up on your finger nail; whatever you are happy with. |

| | | Re: Spider on Epsom common Which book is that Geoff?
I never try to rely on one book.
Make a mix and match of cross reference whether book, web, photos, collections, or keys. Whatever you have to hand really.

| | | Re: Spider on Epsom common I mostly use Michael Roberts Field Guide to Spiders of Britain & Northern Europe. Then if necessary go to a couple of the common spider web sites, one German and one Danish.
I have thought about getting the CD version of British Spiders by Locket & Millidge but it is about £60 and I'm not sure what format they have used so don't know if it would work on my computer.
Still got a couple of uncertain spiders in my 'unfinished' files that I keep going back to every now and then for another look. But as we all know, you can't be 100% certain from photos even when you think you have all the angles covered. | | | | Thread Tools | | | | Display Modes | Linear Mode |
