| | | Spider with distinctive patterned abdomen This spider has its web just inside my greenhouse door (Northants).
Length (excl. legs) is 7.5mm.
Help with identification appreciated.
Nearest I could find is Linyphia hortensis (f) but size in book is only 4-5mm.
Bruce

| | | Re: Spider with distinctive patterned abdomen I have been racking my brains once again trying to ID some spiders with a similar abdomen pattern which I see at this time of the year.
But in your case, those distinctive leg markings suggest Neriene montana to me.
ps. A suggestion not a positive ID. |

| | | Re: Spider with distinctive patterned abdomen Geoff and Gordon - Thanks for your suggested ids.
I'd worked through the Collins guide without finding a single candidate that fitted on both size and appearance. As both of your suggested species (assuming Metellina merianae) are both a good fit on look and size, one definite conclusion is that I'm rubbish when it comes to using guidebooks .
I've since checked out quite a few web images (I also have other shots of this individual to compare to) and tend to lean towards Neriene montana.
