| | | Re: Spiders and conkers Spiders have olefactory (smell) senses and are known to react to certain substances that give off a ‘smell’. It is apparently mainly volatile substances that cause a reaction and can make a spider often run off. I believe clove oil is also repellent to spiders.
As for conkers. I’d assume you’d have break open the conker to release an odour, rather than use a whole intact one as in the ‘experiment’ you cite.
No.9 Spider

| | | Re: Spiders and conkers It does seem implausible does it not? Yet many people have taken to placing these conkers around the house for this very purpose. |

| | | Re: Spiders and conkers I heard this story and as some one who can't stand the thought of spiders in the house and has an attack of the screaming abdabs if I do see one, thought what the heck and gave it a try. In September I piled up conkers, some in their shells and empty shells by the back door.
I was a bit doubtful but I can honestly say that I haven't had one spider in the house since.
(Some of the conkers have now germinated so I have planted one, it will be handy in the future to have my own supply of conkers!) | | | | Thread Tools | | | | Display Modes | Linear Mode |
