| | | Unidentified spider with mauve abdomen Old wood fence near pond at Stony Stratford, Bucks. 20th November 08.
Not 100% confident on size but believe ~5mm excluding legs.
Help with identification appreciated.

| | | Re: Unidentified spider with mauve abdomen I'd say Linyphiidae and most likely Neriene species, a male as well. I'm sure I'm familiar with this one but the name escapes me at the moment. I'll ponder a while .

Leg I is in the way.
Hmm thought Neriene clathrata didn't have annulated legs?

Hmm thought Neriene clathrata didn't have annulated legs? | Yes, according to Roberts that's the case.
Locket & Millidge state "...brown, scarcely if at all annulated..", they also give (for the male palp) "...tibia with a cluster of black bristles" which are quite distinct in the photo.
I can't say I'm 100% on the i.d for this but it's certainly familiar (I've taken L. clathrata on five sites). Unfortunately all colour will have gone from the preserved specimens, though I'll check them out for a general comparison.
The distinct 'W' markings on the abdomen are also noted in Roberts, though they are described as "dark bars" in L & M. Just shows the variation in description I suppose.
The lack of the colour being noted for this species is bugging me (L&M quote a "dark purplish-brown folium", for the female) and the legs are possibly too long.
We could do with a good palp close-up something akin Paul Corfield's Steatoda epigyne photo .
Photographers take note ! Palps, we need a side on photo and a photo of the underside of the palp.
