| | | False Widow? Hello!
My girlfriend went to the supermarket today and bought a few groceries. When she got home and put the vegetables on the table we noticed this little blighter crawling around our brocoli!
It looks to be part of the Steatoda family. Can someone help ID this for me?

| | | Re: False Widow? Hi Peter,
Welcome to WAB Your images...
Yes, it's a False Widow species, most likely a Steatoda grossa. Thanks for the fore-thought of the photos, they really help RE IDs. EDIT: - Sorry Peter, I'm actually not too sure of the differences between S. grossa and S. nobilis to say for sure. It's definately a Steotoda sp., though

Reason: 'S. nobilis' to 'grossa...' you know what it's like ;)

Thankyou for the quick reply and resolving my photo issue!! Can these things bite??? If so, can it be nasty? |

| | | Re: False Widow? Hi Peter,
Sorry, but just so you know - all photos must be in the WAB Gallery, not remotely hosted. Bandwidth, broken links, etc. I realise they are in the Gallery as well, though
As for biting... um, yes - but it's rare, non-poisonous and ONLY WHEN PROVOKED. Not that that's an excuse
It's most likely the spider is British, not imported. S. grossa and S. nobilis are both native to the best of my knowledge.

| | | Re: False Widow? Aaah, ok. I was under the impression the Steatoda family was not British.
Good to hear this spider can't hurt us.
I came across this thread :- http://www.wildaboutbritain.co.uk/fo...ck-spider.html
The spider in the photo contained looks almost identical to one i've caught. The spider is sent to the BAS who comfirm it's a Steatoda paykulliana
Apparently they have a nasty bite |

| | | Re: False Widow? I'm reading through the thread you linked at the moment where the one concerned came in a pack of Pomegranites - they would be grown in Spain. Yours was brocoli from Britain (sounds funny...) so therefor it would be native, as I see it - unless I'm missing something. EDIT: Yours does look a little like it in hindsight; wait for a spider expert to reply to be certain.
Yours would appear to have the said crescent. Even if it is, it still isn't that dangerous, apparently. Where is it now?

| | | Re: False Widow? You are totally right. The spider in the other thread was found in a pack of Pomegranites
Still, it looks to me to be the same spider. Fruit and Veg are placed closely in supermarkets. Maybe my spider felt like taking a stroll. haha
Interesting thread though. |

| | | Re: False Widow? Yes, it is. Please read this thread tomorrow to see what our arachnid experts say - I may be wrong in ID.
Thanks for the ID request - as it gets colder the requests become far less frequent... |

| | | Re: False Widow? It's in a jam jar with the lid closed ( my girlfriends orders ).
It defiantly has the same markings on it's back.It also has the crescent on the front of its abdomen.
Thanks Jason. Will check back tomorrow. | | | | | Thread Tools | | | | Display Modes | Linear Mode |
