| | | Two spiders for ID please Hi,
Saw these at Moor Copse last Saturday. All help with IDs greatly appreciated...
1.
2.
Both were reasonably small, about 12-15mm
Thanks!
Dave P.

| | | Re: Two spiders for ID please 1: Meta (Metellina) segmentata, good underside shot helps to ID this spider - the dark median band doesn't go past the epigyne, IDing this as M.segmentata, though not 100% without studying the epigyne under a microscope.
2: Meta sp, probably M.segmentata again, show's how variable they are.
I'd say your sizes were off though

| | | Re: Two spiders for ID please It's all there in the books - take me out without them and I'll just get to genus, there's a few tricks here and there but its all about observations and knowing what to look for.
Mainly because I don't collect and preserve them, so I have to operate with a field lens and photos and a mental check list.
Then I still don't get them right :P

| | | Re: Two spiders for ID please Venger, well done you on not collecting and preserving the poor creatures!!
That is SO cruel!!
I HATE such methods, seeing that as not knowing your specialist field subject matter!
You have just gone up a trillion in my estimation!! Good lad!!
You are such a young guy to be a hermit? How on earth did you meet your girlfriend?
Bless!!!

| | | Re: Two spiders for ID please Sorry to disappoint NG but actually there's nothing really wrong with collecting them (barring the death of said arachnid). It all depends on why you are collecting them! The amount that humans collect pales to the amount that are eaten everyday.
A scientific collection expands our knowledge on all fronts and you can bet that all the different species that we see listed in our spider books, or key ID's came from studying preserved spiders.
What is more of a worry is the amount killed by loss of habitat and the effects of humankind on nature in general, and the only way to study that effect is to collect and preserve spiders (for a few hundred collected could help ascertain our affect on the environment and save species.)
Personally I don't collect as I'm not engaged in any scientific process or study and collecting for just collecting' sake just leaves me a bit cold (like egg collectors ) but that's just my personal point of view. (I'm talking about those who aren't part of the spider recording scheme who are just interested in spiders as a hobby)
I wasn't always a hermit! - sadly it's a by product of my job - I'm a freelance illustrator so I don't have to leave home to go to work
However it means that I'm not exposed to people everyday and I haven't become tolerant of other peoples habits. So when I do go out I'm always shocked by the startling truth that we're not a very nice species - we're rude, dirty (as in litter and waste), inconsiderate and quite frankly annoyingly stupid of the world around us.
I'm telling you, we need a good cull or something, just don't put me in power you wouldn't like the results

| | | Re: Two spiders for ID please Many thanks Venger, much appreciated! I'd never have put these down as the same species - variable indeed! Quote:
