| | | Spider behaviour Today I came across a pristine orb web occupied by a Garden Spider (Araneus diadematus), who was in the centre. It was a very windy and cloudy day. I watched as the spider retired beneath a leaf. Soon afterwards it came out and began to dismantle the web, then returned to it's place beneath the leaf. I hadn't realised they actually dismantle their web. It was interesting to watch. I wondered whether the spiders instinct had told it there was unlikely to be much activity today? Maybe a silly question, so go easy with me.
Thanks

| | | Re: Spider behaviour Spider recycling!, they eat the old web and respin a new one each day.
I'm not sure when they decide to eat them, I've had a few build indoors and it seems to be completely random.

| | | Re: Spider behaviour I'm so jealous you caught yours in action. I've been keeping watch on one for several days and not been so lucky as yet.
I did notice that when ours was hiding out from the winds that a sensor line was spun from the web and she had one leg touching that. |

| | | Re: Spider behaviour Hi Kia!
I have a jet black Walnut spider that I call 'Boris' who builds a new web every night across my shed doorway and I have never seen it recycling the web no matter how long I wait!
I know that it does it but not when!
There is always a new web there in the morning, sometimes with prey, sometimes without.
