| | | Strange Looking Spider Hiya, Could anyone please help?
Over the past few days I've noticed a unusual looking spider spinning webs across various windows on the outside of my house. Twice over two upstairs windows and once over the patio doors. The web is quite large.
It is quite large and has a stripy body and legs - colour light brownish yellow and cream / white - similar to a lion fish.
I've found some pictures of a wasp spider on this site and the spider is quite similar????
Thanks |

| | | Re: Strange Looking Spider Well first off, welcome to WAB
It would help if you could tell us where you are in the UK.
When you give sizes, exclude the legs - so just the head and abdomen.
Are there any marking on the web, thicker white lines zig-zagging top to bottom?
A photo would help lots.

| | | Re: Strange Looking Spider Going off the description of colour and location of webs, it may be worth a look at Araneus diadematus - the Garden Spider.
Also a photo' could resolve the I.D.
And as Venger says -welcome.

Depending on your locality, your spider could be the recently? (1922) recorded 'Wasp spider' Argiope bruennichi It is known in the South of England and seems to be spreading northwards.
This spider normally builds it's web in grass or similar. My daughter has recorded it in a neighbour's garden in Ashford Kent. It should be recognized by a thicker vertical zig zag line through it's web.
Or, it may be the Garden spider (similar striped colours but different shaped body)which builds it's web across open spaces like shed doorways or windows and is common in late summer/Autumn.
Hope this is of help to you.

Thank you all for your responses.
I tried to get a picture yesterday but it was through the window so it wasn't clear. Will try again if it appears by the patio door. It seems to have moved today from the upstairs window. I did try to catch it yesterday to take a clearer picture but got a bit scared when it started wiggling and also was scared I would hurt it. The bit of web that was stuck on the pot was extremely sticky though!!!!!
I live in the north west around 15 miles from Liverpool. Could it still be a wasp spider????
Will try and get a photo asap.
Again thanks
