| | | Spiders and Webs There is stretch of Box hedging nearby and it is covered in webs and funnels
The Spider is shy
They seem to enjoy some flies with electric blue shells
Are they just Garden Spiders ? |

| | | Re: Spiders and Webs Spiders we normally refer to as Garden spiders ( Araneus diadematus) spin typical orb webs.
Your webs are more typical of species such as Amaurobius and Coelotes with one having the appearance of a typical Tegenaria funnel.
I think you may have at least two different species looking at your photo's.
A photo of one of the inhabitants would clarify which species it is, if you can tempt one out of coourse.

Not too good on spiders, but it looks like you've got an english relative of the funnel web.
Max.

| | | Re: Spiders and Webs Could also be Agelena labyrinthica, they tend to build huge sheet webs.
You'll need to tempt them out with a bit of grass

| | | Re: Spiders and Webs Just had a google and it does look promising for a Agelena labyrinthica
Some of the funnels of which there are about a dozen seem to lead to nowhere !!
I will keep trying for a pic |

| | | Re: Spiders and Webs Do you know anyone who has a tuning fork? I you twang it and put it on the web, the spider will come tearing out and try to kill the tuning fork. It is quite a good trick, but it only fools them once or twice. Anything that will vibrate like that stands a chance of working. |

| | | Re: Spiders and Webs Yes, A. labyrinthica is promising and the 'build' of the part visible spider in one of the photo's certainly looks right. Try to see if the tubes lead to a web chamber in which she will suspend her egg sac, these chambers are quite distinct, and with more than one tubular entrance they are an elusive spider to catch.
A useful trick to lure them out is to grab a handful of light sand, dry earth or similar and slowly let it trickle on the web. Like most tricks they'll get wise to it very quickly.
