| | | 2 Spider IDs, Beetle/Weevil ID?, Wasp/Firefly ID? Finally found a forum where you can get some good information back regarding your finds! Please use the "FULL SIZE" feature on all pics as they are not cropped.
The first one was taken a 3 days ago in the back garden. I think it's either a wasp or a type of firefly. When it felt threaterned, it put its rear up so high it made it hard for it to walk properly. Didn't fly off but looks like it may had wings under there. Pics here - Putfile | delmonte20's Photo Album - FireFly? Wasp?
2nd set of pics is a Beetle or Weaver, pics aren't great but was taken around the same time. Pics here - Putfile | delmonte20's Photo Album - Beetle?
3rd set is of a spider where there is very little light, damp and cracks to come out at night to hunt - Pics here Putfile | delmonte20's Photo Album - Cave Spider?
The last big pic isn't mine but of the same spider I believe, in the UK, in a similar environment. This pics here Uncategorized - Big Spider - Not my pic
Final Spider ID is one the cat found in our front room. I promptly rescued it, took some pics with my mobile (they come out good) and sent it on it's way in the garden! The shot title "The One" I'm quite proud of considering it was my mobile! Putfile | delmonte20's Photo Album - Nice Red Spider
Hope someone can help!
Thanks
Mike

The first one you took, in the second photo, looks like Meta menardi.
And you thought all I could do was drive Formula One.
You ain't seen me, Yerr?

| | | Re: 2 Spider IDs, Beetle/Weaver ID?, Wasp/Firefly ID? Thanks V Much, it certainly is a Woodlouse Spider. Another web pic I found. http://www.spiderzrule.com/spiders061/IMG_0455.JPG
Glad I didn't handle it!
And great for the Meta menardi, spot on too!
Any more ideas on the others anyone?
Quote - Dysdera crocata (Woodlouse spider):
"Dysdera crocata (the woodlouse hunter), has been transported over much of the planet together with its preferred foods - woodlice. Dysdera also feeds on beetles. These spiders have very large chelicerae, which they use to pierce the armored bodies of woodlice and beetles. There are also some reports that they have a mildly toxic venom that can cause local reactions in humans; with their huge fangs there is little doubt that they could bite if threatened, but the venom has not been well studied. It is probably wise not to handle these spiders. The spiders have their six eyes arranged in a semicircle, but have only the first two pairs of legs produced forward. Dysdera crocata has a characteristic colouring - the carapace is dull red-brown and the abdomen gray or tan. The "two-tone" look, with the abdomen much lighter than the cephalothorax, is quite striking. These rather large, burly-looking, slow-moving spiders are often seen in the autumn in basements and other cool areas of homes; presumably they are looking for a winter shelter." |
