| | | Orb web spider ID Was suprised to see this orb web spider ? spinning a new web when the rain finally stopped yesterday on the outside of my greenhouse. I'm useless on spider IDs apart from Araneus diadematus. Body length about 6mm.
Any ideas ?
Thanks

| | | Re: Orb web spider ID Brian.
I find spiders pretty confusing n all, and Venger (gawd bless 'im) is doing his best to educate me/us on our arachnid friends.
I'm going to stick my neck out with your spider, and then be told (probably by Venger himself!) that I'm completely wrong.
But... lets have a stab at:
Zygiella x-notata (the "missing sector orb weaver")
Your spider looks very like Words' (and mine) recent IDs on this forum a week or so ago.
But these orb weavers with their leaf shaped mark on their abdomen are confusing (to me anyway).
Anyway. Thats my guess.... Zygiella x-notata
Apologies if I'm wrong!
Doug

| | | Re: Orb web spider ID Looks like an excellent guess- just looked it up on Nick's Spiders - Zygiella x-notata
Has the statement
"Females of this species are among the few British orb-weavers to build webs all year round."
So that seems to fit aswell especially as it mentions building the webs against windows which is exactly what it was doing.
Thanks

One of the few that are still active in the colder months

| | | Re: Orb web spider ID Re this Missing sector Orb weaver....
I've just been on a 5 minute spider hunt and found half a dozen of these spiders.
All female.
All in their webs.
All their webs missing a sector!
I can't believe I've never really taken this on board until now!
