Strange spider

Can anyone tell me what the following spider is:

Its legs and head are dark blank and slightly hairy looking, it has large red eyes and a huge red back (This has no markings on it is just bright red and smooth looking)

It measures about 5-6cm across.

When i tapped one of its legs instead of running it turned and started being aggressive towards the spatular i was using.

This spider is currently sat in the roof of my garage and i need to move it before i can start painting but i don't want to just let it go in my garden until i know what it is.
