Yes, they can alter their colour - as I said they can be white, yellow or greenish - though it takes quite a while for them to do it (around 2 week+ from what I've read).

Not camouflaged at all to our eyes but I'm not sure what a bird would see. Isn't bird vision more attuned to movement than colour?

Found one of these crab spiders on our brilliant purple buddleia. Great to have this site to help identify it. As we moved the plant about to get a photo, the spider began to lose its bright whiteness and took on a greenish tinge. It seems to have set up shop there, so we are checking on it each day!
