| | Frozen pond and frogspawn Hi there.
My pond is well and truly frozen, and I notice that there is frogspawn in there already! Will they survive? In future if I know it's going to freeze, should I remove the frogspawn from the pond and put it in a bucket somewhere warmer?
Thanks

| | | Re: Frozen pond and frogspawn Hi Ruth, and welcome! I would say the frogspawn should be ok, as long as the ice doesnt stay there for too long... Some of the spawn at the top may be damaged, but in general it should be ok. |

| | | Re: Frozen pond and frogspawn Hi, I agree if the spawn doesn't freeze right through some will survive but you could take some precautions and put some in a bucket until the frost has past.
There is a spawn count here if you want to fill it in.. The big spawn count

| | | Re: Frozen pond and frogspawn As long as the spawn does not go white it should survive, as others have said the spawn exposed to the ice will die. Unless the entire clump freezes solid some will live. Frogs often get caught out, due to their early breeding activity but many still survive. The clumps often sink after a few days/week this usually offers alittle more protection to sudden drops in temperature. A frozen surface is unliely to persist long over the late winter/early spring and eggs require little oxygen so it should not affect them in that way either. |

| | | Re: Frozen pond and frogspawn Thanks for the replies. It had started going a milky white colour on the surface, and the ice is really thick, so I have put it in a bucket in my outhouse for now. It is a pretty hefty clump, and most of it below the surface looks pretty good. Had to do it - felt guilty every time I walked past the pond!
Just a quick further question - should I keep breaking up the ice on the surface?
Thanks again.

Ruth | Is the ice on the pond or the bucket..
Don't bother with the ice on the pond it will be fine sometimes it only makes things worse I think. |

Thanks. | I defrosted mine last year and the water went bad and everything died so I am not touching it this year I will let nature take its course and just defrost the bird bath for the birds to drink. | | | | | Thread Tools | | | | Display Modes | Linear Mode |
