frog basking in mud at night

Just photographed this little beauty stretching his legs in the nighttime mud of our wildlife pond! Was wondering what the red spot to the lefthand side of his head might be

it's called the tympanic membrane and it's used for hearing.

Just popped out to investigate some, 'night time croaking', to discover a second frog, quite different in shape and colour, has joined our 1st friend!
First time I've seed two frogs together at the same time in our pond! Bit of flirting going perhaps........or too early?

Too late in the year, it would be exceptionally unusual for breeding to occur within September. Although it does look like a male and female from the photo's.
