Nice photo Madelinew. My wildlife pond attracts large numbers of Common Frogs + some Smooth Newts, but sadly no Common Toads. Some years back I introduced some toad spawn from a friend's small pond, but no toadlets were seen. Another friend donated 3 adult toads which she didn't want in her Koi pond, but they obviously don't like my pond as they disappeared.
Generally they prefer larger + deeper ponds, but the spawn I introduced came from a tiny artificial pond, so I don't know the reason, though I have read that frog tadpoles can release a chemical that inhibits the growth of the toad tadpoles, yet they happily co-exist in many ponds.

Apparently the photo is too big. I suppose that's what comes of taking it on my husband's decent Nikon. I'll have a go another time and try to save it to a smaller file.
Good news tho! Have found great trails of toad spawn this afternoon. Kids await the hatching with great anticipation. So does Mum... |
