| | | Please ID Hi,
My grandad found this newt (I think it's a newt) in a plant he bought and I was wondering what kind it is? I would also like any information on what to do with it, It's really little (around 5/6cm inc. tail) so I think it might be a young one and I don't know if it'll survive on it's own or I would've let it go already.
Any information would be appreciated,
Thanks. |

| | | Re: Please ID hi and welcome to WAB,
this is a newt, a smooth or palmate newt. if you want an id you can flip it over so we can get a definite id (smooth newts have spotted throats while palmate newts have pale pinkish throats without spots) it should be able to survive on its own but release it near a nice, fish free pond. its unusual to find it in plants. make sure its not hurt in anyway and it should be released.

| | | Re: Please ID Before you release it get a photo of the underside so we can ID it, although 99% sure its a smooth. What plant is it? was it from an outdoor garden centre? ideally if you live close to the garden centre it would be best released back there. Just need to be sure of what it is first. A photo of the throat, and bases of the hind feet (it will squirm when you do this so be secure or place it on a clear surface and photograph up under it. |

| | | Re: Please ID It fell from a plant that my grandad got from a local church, the strange thing is that there isn't a pond close by :S I tried to get a photo but couldn't, I don't have anything clear enough to get a good photo through and I don't want to hurt it lol but going on GCN lova's description it's a smooth, it's a fairly orangey colour underneath with tiny spots around the head/throat area
It's right front foot is injured or deformed but it seems to be walking around OK, there's a country park nearby that it should be OK in (I find tiny frogs and things there all the time) and I'll release tomorrow but what should I give it to eat in the meantime? I don't want it to get weak from not eating, I've put in a mealworm but it doesn't seem to be interested :S |

| | | Re: Please ID If your releasing it tomorrow I would'nt worry to much, it may feed on the mealworm overnight. If not some small earthworms or slugs would work. |
