| | | Unusual resting place This little fellow has an unusual place for resting up or is it an ambush point for rodents - I don't know! It certainly seems to use it regularly.
and a couple from it's wanderings |

| | | Re: Unusual resting place it does seem a little tight in there (first shot) but clearly he (or she) is happy there. What sort of size are we looking at ? doesn't look too big but only really the gravel to compare it against.
Lovely colouration and markings though. |

| | | Re: Unusual resting place They like tight gaps, especially like this which looks like its quite sheltered from predators. Its most likely using this to rest in rather than to hunt from. Its a female, it looks quite an unusual habitat is it urban? |

| | | Re: Unusual resting place No, it's a place in Sutherland a couple of miles from the nearest habitation. The place is a real adder haven and I've seen them there often. This one does seem to have become very bold. It's one of the biggest I've seen. Incidentally I also saw a couple of ravens tearing one apart just a few days before but they flew away before I got a picture. Whether that was a road kill victim or not I can't say. |

tim | Aaah, the amount of time we have to use that line There are no poisonous snakes anywhere, you can eat them all
I was hospitalised by an adder for a week. The pain was excruciating and far worse than a puff adder bite I got a few years earlier. When I was 18 I was bitten by a very large female, but it had less of an effect even though my arm doubled in size and ballooned alarmingly, that was just an overnighter. A huge amount of different factors can affect each bite. Such as location of bite, size of victim, size of snake, venom yield, time of year, heat of day, time of day, activity of victim, activity of snake, what caused it to strike, fang shedding, sloughing period (dangerous time to get bitten during that), one fang or two, speed of strike.. and it goes on. |
