| | | what type of snake is this? Its in my garden right now and my wife is scared, we live in Murcia, Spain. It is approx 4ft - 5ft. and about 7 inches in diamater. I have looked on the internet and cannot find what type of snake it is. It does not have a yellow ring round its neck so I dont think its a grass snake. |

| | | Re: what type of snake is this? I'm no expert, but looking on this website, it made me think possibly the "Ladder Snake" Non Venomous snakes found in Spain
Quick google of this and the following page came up. Looks quite alike to me, but you can obviously see it clearer in the flesh to confirm (3rd and 4th pic seem to confirm it to me) Reptiles & Amphibians of France - Ladder snake, Rhinechis scalaris
If i'm right then its non-venomous |

| | | Re: what type of snake is this? I don't think it's one of those... It doesn't look to have the same barring across the stripes to me... But I'm no expert in Spanish snakes unfortunately! Hopefully someone with far better snake I.D skills than myself could help you out though. Is there an 'RSPCA' equivalent or a reptile group you could call in the area to remove it if it's in a residential area? |

| | | Re: what type of snake is this? Your right after reading about the ladder snake it looks like that is what it is. It must be quite old as it only has the vertical stripes. Its found a whole and gone down under the patio, there is no RSPCA here, but I am sure I will find someone who can help. Cheers for your replies. |

| | | Re: what type of snake is this? Since this is a completely harmless, non-venomous species, is there any reason why you can't just leave it where it is? It may well move on of its own accord anyway, but if it does stay around then at least it should help to keep the numbers of rats and mice down. |

| | | Re: what type of snake is this? I would concur that this is indeed a ladder snake. I'm planning on doing a little herping in Southern Spain this summer so I've recently been reading as much as I can on your native snakes. Compare your photo to the Ladder Snake on this thread: http://www.reptileforums.co.uk/forum...thread-29.html
As King Edward said this is a non-venomous snake and poses no threat to you at all. It will only bite if handled. At that size it will be feeding mainly on small mammals like rats etc as mentioned.
Best regards,
Jason

| | | Re: what type of snake is this? It's a perfectly harmless Ladder and you should just let it go about its life. She, (at the size it is I think it is a she), will clear your garden of vermin like rats and mice. Let her do her job and she'll wander off as soon as the food runs out. She will warn you by hissing if you get too close and she may bite if you try to handle her.
