| | | Re: frogs/toads It depends where you live + on the weather. First emergences tend to be in south-west + later further north you go. I live in the London suburbs + my frogs usually return later this month. Last year was the earliest they returned, but because of a cold snap the spawn was later than normal + didn't appear until early March (normally late Feb).
The toads tend to emerge later. If you live in a mild area keep looking on mild nights particularly if it's wet. For me seeing 80+ frogs having a mass orgy in my pond is my own mini Serengeti! |

| | | Re: frogs/toads My frogs have been calling and I had spawn on the 29 01 07
This mornings white frost seem s to have cooled their ardour
I have not yet had the frog jaccuzi effect, hundreds of them
at it, water replaced by frogspawn (almost)
The Toads will not be far behind and We wanted to alter the
pond

| | | Re: frogs/toads so do you think we would see some soon.
i dont know if i have frogs in my garden,we had long grass and found one in there think a marsh frog, but my silly dad got rid of it all,we have seen another small frog on our pavement at night,i wanted to know will they be here now,i was told to go out at night with a torch and look, will they have gone to ponds etc were they can breed,is there anything i can get to bring them in (apart from a pond)
whats there habitat,we have a sub station behind us were electricity goes from, and around there its all overgrown etc,we think lots lives in there,i cant go there.
what do frog droppings look like?
when is the best time to look for them?
and were in the garden is best,we have some planks of wood, may they be under there? |

| | | Re: frogs/toads I probably wouldn't bother looking too much this week as it's supposed to be turning quite wintry with arctic winds! The Common Frogs only require a pond for breeding + though some stay around it for most of the year many disperse well away from water. Providing it's reasonably moist + there is some cover they should thrive providing they have access to a good supply of invertebrate grub- compost heaps often attract frogs + toads as there's plenty to eat. An area of long grass/herbage would be good.
Marsh Frogs which are introduced to this country are much larger when adult, are much more aquatic (they love sunbathing at edge of larger ponds/dykes) + not normally found away from water. They don't emerge until much later as they need warmer water to breed + are incredibly noisy- the laughing sound can resemble ducks quacking. When they emerge from hibernation they are normally brown but soon become green after sunbathing + lack the dark patch behind the eye normally seen on Common Frog.
We have a large population of these frogs at the London Wetland Centre + they make a real din which I enjoy- maybe Paul McCartney heard these near his home at Lydd, near where they were first introduced, for his awful Frog Chorus! Herons love them! |

a pond nearby or another moist area, they need cool moist (not cold)
I would leave the feeding until you see them as it could get expensive
but there is no harm in trying
