| | | Re: Marsh Frogs replacing Common Frogs? They don't basically!
Marsh frogs tend to inhabit coastal ditches (often slightly saline) and larger lakes where other UK species dont live, with the except of the common toad in lakes. Toads however have a much more land based existance so fit into a different niche.
In fact rather than be a problem they are a net gain, as they are an good food source for grass snakes, marsh harriers, herons, egrets and many other species. |

| | | Re: Marsh Frogs replacing Common Frogs? Agree with the above post, Marsh frogs and commons do not really cross
paths. In france common frogs co-exist with Marsh, Edible, Pool, Agile,
Common toads, green toads, Bombina and probably many more.
sorry to say but us humans are the reason behind the decline of the common
Frog.

| | | Re: Marsh Frogs replacing Common Frogs? Marsh Frogs were introduced near Romney Marsh in the 1930s and have become well established in Kent and the south-east of England since then. To date they haven't got past London, where warm evenings can sound reminiscent of The Camargue. I live in north Surrey and can hear them, in the local former reservoirs that are now being extracted, from my house some several hundred yards away. As Neil said they are an additional food source for many predators. Not sure about the adults, but as they lay their spawn later than common frogs, the tadpoles don't appear to compete for the same food source as common froglets have hopped it when marsh frogpoles are swimming about it.
Cheers,
Adam |

| | | Re: Marsh Frogs replacing Common Frogs? Hi Adam, I am also in west molesey and I must live very near you as I have been listening to the marsh frogs in the evenings. I also have marsh frogs and common frogs in my pond and they seem to coexist with no problems. |
