| | | Newts yesterday Sitting enjoying the sun yesterday, I saw movement in my pond and after a while I spied a female smooth newt, then it was joined by a male. I was quite thrilled that Mr and Mrs Newton (sorry had to name them!) had chosen my pond.....several hrs later the pair had been joined by a second male and it looked like some sexual activity was occuring......
I feel very priviledged that the newts are in residence, but how did they find my little garden pond? Although the garden backs onto another garden and then the cycle track and stream, its some distance and up a steep back. There are also large ponds (fishing/wildlife type)in both directions but some fair distance away across rds and gardens etc.
Regards, nursie |

| | | Re: Newts yesterday Apart from the breeding season, newts spend the rest of their life on dry land, coming out at night to hunt. They have been known to travel quite a distance from a pond.
Why not take part in the Easter Newt Hunt (if there is still time). You have to watch your pond for 10 minutes during the day and 10 mins at night with a torch and count the newts. The Great Easter Newt Hunt - Home page
Do it today! Enjoy!

| | | Re: Newts yesterday I know the elation something so simple can cause! This evening I found FOUR smooth newts under one single rock while I was doing some herping here in Ireland. Incredible feeling!
I'll post some pictures on my reptile hobby site within a couple days for anyone who wants to see them. http://www.reptilerevolution.com
