| | | The Herps of Hounslow Heath Does anyone know which reptile species are to be found on Hounslow Heath? Is it worth an enthusiastic novice paying it a visit? I missed an LNHS/LEHART walk there today due to other commitments.

Ahh aeshna5, you made the walk. Wonderful.
I think the same expert/guide found one of the other ones for us last night:
We walked up meet him and he already had two of that area's rarest species in his hands. What an brilliant introduction.
Are the species you saw easy to spot for an amateur, or would it be best to go with an expert another time?

| | | Re: The Herps of Hounslow Heath I think if you have sharp eyes + a basic knowledge of their behaviour you should have a reasonable chance of finding your own, but not as many as with Will, who monitors the site, so knows all the best places.
Getting the right weather conditions is paramount to find basking individuals. mornings that start cool + slowly warm up - a mix of cloud with some sun or even showers is good. If you just have sun you'll need to start early if it gets pretty warm as they soon disappear! |

I have seen adders before, I do know I am capable of spotting them, so I'll try and give this a go. They are fantastic creatures.

| | | Re: The Herps of Hounslow Heath even if you don't see reptiles there are plenty of other things over there to see. i used to walk over there in my lunchbreak. it's still the only place i have seen the day flying small yellow underwing moth.

If you're over that way the River Crane is worth exploring with Kingfisher, Water Vole, Marsh Frogs + Grass Snakes possible- there is a London Wildlife Trust Reserve with a tower there. |
