| | | favourite British newt? hi members
not wishing to sound like im staging a popularity contest or anything but do you have a fave UK newt species?
not me.
im a fence-sitter im afraid.
i think (owing to size and extravagance of breeding costume in males) CRESTEDS are the most impressive to behold.
theres also the allure of implied (in law, not reality) rarity and elite special protection with TC.
SMOOTH newts (despite being the most ubiquitous and frequently encountered) are the most beautiful in my humble (or arrogant if you like) opinion.
but then.....
PALMATES hold a special place for me too; owing to their diminutive size, modest elegance, oft-"overlooked" and less well- publicised on forums status, unique webbed feet and the fact that they were the first native species i encountered. many years ago!!!!
i get equal thrill from seeing any of the 3 meself!
how 'bout you?

I still can't tell the difference between the other two!
Best regards,
Jason

But, if I really have to choose then....
Palmate
I do like the markings on the male's head.
