| | | My first Grass Snake of 2011 Hi there. I thought I'd share a photo taken earlier today. It has been unusually warm today (23°C) for April so I was hoping to see my first Grass Snake of 2011. Thankfully the day didn't disappoint with this beautiful example basking along the edge of a stream.
Best regards,
Jason

I've noticed that they only start 'tongue flicking' when they've detected you.

| | | Re: My first Grass Snake of 2011 Thanks for your comments. Yes, the tongue flicking comes just before they disappear normally! I love to be photographing reptiles in Dorset at the weekend.
Good luck with the photos.
Best regards,
Jason

| | | Re: My first Grass Snake of 2011 Thank you both for your comments. Most Grass Snakes I see are disappearing into the undergrowth too. I was very lucky with this one. I saw it very slowly slithering into some nettles. I was only about 4ft away and I didn't think it had yet noticed me as I was up-wind and walking incredibly slowly. I very gently sat down and stayed perfectly still for about five minutes. To my delight the Grass Snake emerged from the nettles and sat in front of me without either knowing or caring about my presence.
Best regards,
Jason
