| | | somthing Black and fast Out today and as i aproached near a old overgrown pond i saw something shoot off at speed through the bluebell cover , it was shiny and looked Black and the part i saw was about an inch thick. no chance of a Photo. any thoughts |

wigan is definitely not too far north for grass snakes, which was also my first thought.

| | | Re: somthing Black and fast I honestly can't say either way but if it was its the first one i have ever seen around here, it is hard when you only get a fleeting glimpse of a part of something. the ones i saw in Shropshire had a green tinge to them. It was definitely something cold blooded as it had clearly been taking in the afternoon sun. |

Any idea? | Definitely not mammal, you just know when something is different or unusual thats why i remember it, it didn't seem to have a gait although it could have been the tail , however black slightly shiny fast and in my opinion an all too perfect place for a reptile sunning itself, it didn't dive into the water either. |

On a tangent; if grass snakes were spreading north, would melanistic forms become more common because they warm up quicker in the sun?

There is also a specially made area for them at Orrel water park.
