| | | Re: When do frogs and toads stop laying spawn in ponds? Depends on latitude/ location and temperature. They are both explosive breeders and usually breed over a week at a pond. When large numbers group up. Each individual female can only breed once a year and produces all of her eggs in one go. As soon as a female visits a pond she is intercepted by many males and breeds, this often occurs at the same time. Frogs/toads in the south of England usually breed first and ones in Northern Scotland usually last. Its not unusual to find unmated males in ponds late into the summer still trying to find a female.
Newts on the other hand have a drawn out breeding (ovipositing) season which can last a couple of months (in some cases). |
