Hi,
Just a quickie....I went to my local reserve the other day and for the first time saw multiple newts !!!. However the conditions weren't great so I couldnt get a decent look at them for a positive ID
However I just read the 'identify' page on the newt hunt page and it mentioned maybe seing a silver flash from male Great Crested Newts' tail when underwater.
Would this be a definitive ID ?? or can the others have silver tails
as all the ones I saw were flashing around in the mud/leaf litter in the ditch.

Male GCN have a pale silver stipe down the centre of the tail this is not seen in either smooth or palmate. GCN are also a lot bigger than the other two if that helps. |
