| | Found frog with spawn in a bag help needed today i found a frog with spawn in a small carrier bag in my garden with very little water,i moved it into a large tub with some rocks, and it can easily get onto our lawn which is damp,i put frogspawn on rock near surface, its still immature,as in just a black dot, some of the jelly around is just clear, some milky, the frogs stayed in with spawn a couple of hours, hasnt left, will any survive and is there anything else i can do to help them or is it too late in year.? if any hatch i will of course release them into the local pond.Has anyone else ever found a frog with spawn in a small bag in the back garden? lol |

You'll get more answers there!

| | | Re: Found frog with spawn in a bag help needed Well done.
Does the frog have a white throat (male) or yellowish/pinky (girl)? If a male, he may well stick around all summer.
Please add some oxygenators (underwater plants) to the tub if you don't already.
No need to put the froglets in another pond- you may spread disease that way. Just make sure there is a ramp of some sort out of the tub and to the ground. They don't need to return to a pond until about 2 or 3 years old.
By then you will have dug your own pond.....

| | | Re: Found frog with spawn in a bag help needed Make sure there is some shade, or they could dry-up or run out of oxygen.
There may be trouble with some predators, so you may have to position net or Black thread over the water/bank area. |

| | | Re: Found frog with spawn in a bag help needed Thank you for all the help, just checked the frog is still there so maybe its a male! iv made sure that if need be it can get in and on on to the lawn, will the frog come out at night to eat? and what if so? the tub has no plants in just a fake one for shade, but il buy a small under water plant today, but after me moving the spawn from the bag im not so sure they will hatch out,il just have to wait, how long does it take? my mother has a year or so old pond with no fish in and has asked for some when"if" they become tadpoles, also i have a very good cat repelling alarm so i now have birds back in the garden but they dont go near the tub,
Cheers again and sorry this is posted twice

| | | Re: Found frog with spawn in a bag help needed Well done for saving your spawn, but as previously mentioned, please do not move the spawn, any resulting tadpoles or the adult frog to your mother's pond. There are several very infectious and fatal frog diseases in the country at the moment, and these can be spread by people moving infected frogs between ponds. If you mother's pond is in a "clean" area and your tadpoles/frogs happen to carry this virus, you would infect her pond and any future frogs who visit there.
In time, her pond will attract its own wildlife.
Spawn hatching is determined by temperature, and the tadpoles will also develop faster when its warmer. Depending on how large the tub is, you will have to change some of the water regularly to keep it healthy. Try not to use tap water - do you have a water butt as this is fine. If not, tap water left in a bucket outside overnight will allow the chemical to disperse and it will then be safe. Change about 20-30% of the water once a week.
As its not a natrual envionment for them, the hatching tads will also need something to eat. They do OK on goldfish flakes/pellets - I usually take a small tank full to the Playgroup where I work, and they feed then these. Only give a small pinch every day at first, and see how much they eat. As they grow, they will need more, but don't overdo as it will poison the water.
Also, if frost is due overnight (forecast says if may get colder again next week), is the tub likely to freeze?
Well done to taking the time to rescue them, as you have given them a lot better chance that where they were. Frogs don't seem to be the most intelligent on where they lay - any water will do!
