| | | Re: sinking frog spawn I had quite a few blobs that sank and the taddies have hatched and are perfectly ok so i dont think you need to worry too much ...sadly for them but luckily for the newts as they do seem to be taking full avantage of the sunken spawn when i take a look with my torch every night marion

| | | Re: sinking frog spawn Think it must be fashionable to sink this year as ours has sunk for the first time that I can remember although we had to do some work on our pond last year as it developed a leak and had to take the plants out so they got a more severe trim than usual and they haven't grown back with so much gusto yet so there's not the anchorage.

| | | Re: sinking frog spawn Hi, I'm really glad I found this thread! I've just starting filming the frogs in my garden and bought a cheap aquarium so that I can continue to film the frogspawn turn into tadpoles, etc.
After filling the aquarium up with some pond plants and pond water, the frogspawn just sank when I put it in the tank! Hopefully it will be ok
My frog 'film' - all 48 seconds of it - is at Frogs on Vimeo if you're interested.
Thanks,
Danielle. |

Ah,also my pond is in a semi shady spot. So light levels could be a factor too? |

| | | Re: sinking frog spawn I'd never thought that different areas of the country would get frogspawn at different times! Seems obvious though, after all plants flower at different times. Anyway, I filmed those frogs on Saturday, and thinking back the spawn has been there for a few days.
The pond is now well established, and is a fabulous habitat for all sorts of things; it's in a sunny position and gets the sun for much of the day. One side of it is open to the garden, but there's plenty of vegetation down the other side.
Do you think that the frogspawn here is particularly early this year?

| | | Re: sinking frog spawn It's just amazing how quickly a pond becomes colonised isn't it?! How on earth do the pond snails, pond skaters, leeches and so on find it?
I managed to get some lovely pictures of dragonflies last year, and later on this year I might try to film those, but for now I'm on the 'frog project'!

| | | Re: sinking frog spawn I'm really jealous. The ponds in the woods near me have frogs, but I have no frogs and no spawn either so far.
Thinking about it, my neighbours in the street who have ponds have never said that they got frogspawn, so maybe for some reason this area has just never been colonized. We get lots of newts though! And I do get lots of toads in the garden. | | | | | Thread Tools | | | | Display Modes | Linear Mode |
