| | Keeping frogspawn in buckets Just want to make sure I'm doing this right. I have had to move out frog spawn out of our pond into buckets to prevent fish from eating it.
I've put several clumps of frog spawn into a bucket filled with pond water and have moved this to a safe place, away from direct sunlight. I've also put some pond weed into the bucket and will probably add more soon.
Want to know if any of you have had experience doing and how successful it was. Lastly, when and how did you release them ? |

| | | Re: Keeping frogspawn in buckets I put some in a fish tank no fish were in it and changed the water with pond water to keep the water clean once a week.
I did this as there was a frost and released them as soon as they got their back legs.
I put them back into my barrel I have on the patio this is where they breed and has no fish.
This is something you could think about as they dont need care apart from the odd flaked fish food later on.
I have lots of ogygenatore in the barrel as well as some yellow flag iris. |

| | | Re: Keeping frogspawn in buckets Boiled nettle leaves also work well as food. With a lot of tadpoles, they really do get through the food very quickly. I think it's a good idea to change the water regularly as the tadpoles develop (after hatching), since with large numbers in a small space the waste does accumulate. |

| | | Re: Keeping frogspawn in buckets Yep I used to keep tadpoles in buckets as a kid and as long as the water is changed regularly (say 20% every few days) you should get a pretty good survival rate. Make sure to cover with mesh or netting as birds (especially magpies) will prey on the them. |

rabbit pellet
An alternative is to get one of those pop up laundry bins.
Put spawn in that in pond with a nice lot of oxygenators etc.
The fish shouldn't be able to get at the spawn or tadpoles.

| | | Re: Keeping frogspawn in buckets I always found that frog tadpoles unlike toad tadpoles turn carnivore when they reach the stage just before they grow legs (when they are large and camo coloured). If some form of meaty food is not provided the larger ones will start to prey on their smaller/weaker siblings. If you want to raise quantity over quality then you should provide some kind of meat such as slivers of liver, chopped earthworms or meaty fish food.
I remember we had a big tank full of toad tadpoles in school in primary 3 and I found a single large frog tadpole in a drying up pond in the school grounds. I popped him into the tank without telling anyone and on returning to class on Monday found it had killed and eaten every last toad tadpole. My teacher thought it must have just been a rouge tadpole so I kept quiet
