| | | Red frog identification I've seen two of these now in Mid West Wales. I guess it COULD be a common frog, but the colouring really seems unusual. I grew up in this area and never saw any like this as a child. And now I've seen two in the past two years. Is it a common frog or some other kind? |

| | | Re: Red frog identification WOW!
It's definitely a Common Frog ( Rana temporaria)...but an amazingly beautiful and unusual colour variation.
The colours are fantabulous |

| | | Re: Red frog identification I personally haven't seen a Common Frog this red, though it is one. They can show great variety in colour as others have said. |

| | | Re: Red frog identification When i was a lad (couple of years back ) i was forever at the local ponds catching newts and common frogs.I remember that i was always amazed at the variation in colours of adult frogs from any given pond.I saw a few like the frog you have but they were few and far between that colour..Frogs have great variation in colour, and remind me of autumn leaves in there colour variations. |

| | | Re: Red frog identification So s/he's a not-so-common Common Frog then. Still a mighty special one in my books. S/he was very friendly too, happily posing for my photos.

I have never seen a frog with that kind of colouring, we have loads in the garden and they are all... err... Common or Garden coloured.

| | | Re: Red frog identification It's funny that I never saw frogs this colour before and have seen two now in the last year or so. It was this one (image below) that I saw the other night on the garden path that prompted me to upload the first photo (which is from somewhere near Capel Bangor Sept 2009):
Maybe red is fashionable for the Common Frogs of Mid Wales these days. |

| Maybe they're bidding to replace the Red Dragon! They're not fire-breathing frogs are they?
