| | | Rare Newt? Yesterday we found a large newt inside our house on the doormat. Its underside is orangy yellow with dark blotches. Could this be a great crested newt and what implications would this have on having them on our land? I have some pics but not sure how to upload |

| | Re: Rare Newt? 100% a great crested newt.
You are very lucky to have them on your land, such stunning creatures!
It is an offence to kill, injure or capture them; disturb them in any way; damage or destroy their habitat and possess them or sell or trade them in any way.
If you have any ponds or hibernation sites (i.e. piles of stone or logs) then you shouldn't really be disturbing them, unless any ponds need careful management (seek advice).
It will have implications if you plan to develop any of your land. It is highly likely there are records for this species in your area anyway so whether you declare that you have them or not you would be required to have a survey undertaken and measures put in place while any work was going on.
It really its that much of an issue, nothing to worry about. Personally I would encourage them on your land. You can get help and advice from your local amphibian and reptile group ARG-UK - Amphibian & Reptile Group of United Kingdom |

| | | Re: Rare Newt? BTW we put it back in the garden hopefully it found a safe haven! Haven't searched for others but we have a pond loads of piles of stones and a stream at the bottom of our paddock so it should be ok. Curious to know how
many we may be harbouring | | | | Thread Tools | | | | Display Modes | Linear Mode |
