| | | Smooth Newt? I found this very small newt in the grass at a local nature reserve today. It was only 4cm long so is this a juvenile Smooth Newt?

difficult to tell between smooth and palmate at that age. the method i use is the dorsal stripe method IngentaConnect The dorsal stripe in newt efts: a method for distinguishing Tritu... but as this can't be seen from the pic i wouldn't like to say.
one other thing to consider is habitat. palmates generally occur in more acidy conditions, e.g. upland heath so that might help.
