| | | Re: Can I get someone to like adders? I've only seen one on two occasions. The first time was when I was about 11 years old on holiday in Somerset. I'd taken my cousins' dog out for a walk along the cliffs and let him off the lead. He ran off and started barking at something he'd found. I went to investigate and saw that he'd found an adder, I'd seen photographs of them so I knew what they looked like. I got the dog away from it and left it. The second time was about four years ago, on the Gower Peninsula in Wales. I was on a footpath and saw a small group of people looking at something. When I got up to them I saw that it was a baby adder, about 9" long. I suppose that it liked the warmth of the asphalt which had been heated by the sun. I persuaded it to get off the path by pushing it with my wallet, and it went into the undergrowth. I've always liked snakes.
My mother came from Plymouth, and went out for a picnic on Dartmoor with her brothers. They laid a cloth down on some grass and started laying out the food etc. then noticed that something was moving underneath it. On removing the cloth they found that they had put it on what I suppose could be called a nest of vipers. There were several of them, apparently.

I have watched them all I can in my 59 years, the last one I saw was a female at Waggoners Wells in Surrey 2 weeks ago and unlike most Adders it was near the ponds with all the dogs! I hope it made its way out safely. | | | | | Thread Tools | | | | Display Modes | Linear Mode |
