Squeaking frog

While watering pots on my patio a few days ago I heard a loud squeak followed by another. On closer investigation I realised the sounds had come from a frog which was hidden under the leaves of a hosta in a pot. My husband has also heard the noise since then as well.

This frog has actually now taken up residence in the pot and comes and goes but does not move much if I gently push the leaves aside to look at him/her.

Has anyone heard of a frog squeaking like this before? I thought they just croaked. If it squeaks does this mean it is in pain?

Frogs squeak as a defence mechanism. For example I've heard and seen a frog doing this when a cat was ‘playing’ with it. Unless you are actually injuring the frog I would imagine it just feels threatened.

Yes a defence mechanism to make the attacker let go... it works well with humans but not cats unfortunately
