Lizards or Newts - ID please

Are these lizards or newts? We were dismantling a wall in our garden (it was unstable) and found loads of these, literally crawling out of the brickwork (similar to drystone wall). We do not have a pond but there is a dried up on in a nature areas approx 30m away. We found lots more than the ones in this photo!

I always thought newts were rare? After the amount we saw today, they are not rare in my garden! We still have more wall to dismantle. We have an area of no-mans land beyound our garden and we built a 'new home' for them there.

They are not really rare,but as ponds are filled in with development etc,they become less and less common.Well done on looking out for them.A dark place they can crawl under is ideal.They like somewhere they can just fit under,like large stones/bolders or logs etc.The great crested newt is the rarest british native newt i beleive.Yours look like common or palmate newts.

palmate newts they spend time in ponds feb to june rest of time on land undre logs stone walls and old animal burrows

I never realised they gathered in such huge amounts! Lucky you, hope they settle into their new home.

Hi,
They look like lizards to me, tails curled etc. Check the number of toes, newts have 4 lizards 5.

LOL - My 6 year old son had taken the photo into school for his 'show and tell' and told everyone they were lizards!! Now we are properly informed, when we dismantle the next part of the wall we can take more photos and he can do a 'show and tell' and tell them they are newts this time!
