| | | female adder hello ,
my wife and i were very lucky enough to spot a young female adder the other day , she was about 6 inches long . I wonder if anyone could tell me how old she would be , given that breeding females dont feed until after giving birth ?
Also when we first saw her she was in the process of eating a small rodent ( i think a vole , maybe a shrew ) , but as we stood watching a very irresponsible dog owner allowed their dog to come poking its nose in ,( i scuffed the dog away immediately ) however the poor adder regurgitated the rodent and promptly slithered away into the heather . I was wondering if she would return to her meal later and eat , or ignore it and seek fresh prey ?
As i say we felt very privileged to have seen her and no harm came to her .
cheers |

| | | Re: female adder Yes, definately last years young. They are all a kind of browny colour until they reach maturity. It is unfortunately doubtful that it will return to it's meal, although I have seen it happen a couple of times, so you never know. |

| | | Re: female adder cheers for the info .
So it could have been a young male adder ? , given that they are all a browny colour when young ?
I haven't seen an adder for ten years , so felt very lucky to have seen it , i understand that if you know the correct places to look they can be fairly easy to find ?
Also does anyone know of any good publications or papers /books on Adders , they really are fascinating . I was looking for a book by
Tony Phelps , knowing that he is a very respected expert on Adders .
Any info would be hugely appreciated
cheers ,glyn. |

And yes, it could well be a male adder you saw. | | | | Thread Tools | | | | Display Modes | Linear Mode |
