strange place to lay an egg!

my son found this in our pond today:





not the clearest pics in the world but it is a smooth newt egg that has been laid on a snail.

It does look like that.
I was watching one lay an egg once (in a tank) and the egg was laid, but still stuck to her. It appeared to me that all she was trying to do was wipe it off rather than specifically fold it in a leaf, but presumably she needed something between the egg and both feet.
Maybe the snail just happened to be in the foliage when she laid it, and it ended up stuck to it.
