| | | Newt Spawn? I spotted a little beige blob on a watercress leaf a little while ago, I have been checking every other day or so (trying to identify the right clump of cress is fun lol I only have about 20!)
I am now convinced it's a newt egg (I have seen several).
They wriggle a little
So is it, or isn't it ?
Thank You for any i.d . |

| | | Re: Newt Spawn? I would say yes- a smooth or palmate newt, not a great crested newt.
Usually the egg is folded into a leaf, but if they can't fold it, it will be stuck to a surface of a leaf or stem. |

| | | Re: Newt Spawn? It would be palmate I guess as that is what I seem to be seeing in the pond (i.d through pics on here and have seen several with tail filaments).
I had read somewhere about them being in a folded leaf, and have seen folded leaves, obviously didn't unfold them to check what's in them. I have seen at least 2 like this just placed on the underside of the cress.
Thank you |

| | | Re: Newt Spawn? Watercress is actually quite stiff compared with water forgetmenot. Great cresteds can fold it quite easily, but I think it is more difficult for the smaller newts. | | | | Thread Tools | | | | Display Modes | Linear Mode |
