Definitely not a great crested newt.

Most probably a female smooth newt but could possibly be a palmate. Did you pick it up and look at it's underside?

No, it was so tiny I didn't want to risk hurting it. It was crossing a country road towards a pond in heavy rain.

If you see one like this again, take a photo from above as well.
In theory it's possible to tell by the stripe/ line along the back.

Palmate, probably one of last years hatchlings. Personaly i'd have moved it to safety they're tougher than they look.
