Palmates are the rarest of the 3 newts in Essex, we tend to have smooth newts and great crested in Essex, although palmates do turn up in some woodlands (e.g. Epping Froest and Norsey wood)

And suffolk too - not sure if there are even any palmates in Suffolk. Certainly there are parts of the country where palmates deserve protection possibly more than great crested newts!

A lovely story, Dave!

I'm just starting to 'get into' newts and I read only last night how partial they are to a bit of litter as a daytime refuge. A great tale, and also a cautionary one.
